The
Maze of Lanes a short film from the Crossing Project Exhibit,
has been selected by the Yamagata International Documentary
Film Festival 2003 (YIDFF) and will be screened in Yamagata,
Japan, between October 10-20, 2003. Yamagata City, 300 km
north of Tokyo, was the first to hold an international documentary
film festival in Asia. Now the festival is held every two
years, and is considered to be one of the most prestigious
documentary festivals in the world, showcasing the best of
International documentary.
The
Crossing Project, is an award-winning, pioneering multimedia
interactive exhibit, that combines high-technology and ancient
tradition to present a fascinating experience of Banaras,
one of the oldest living sites of sacred geography in the
world.
The
film 'The Maze of Lanes' is a short lyrical exploration and
an amazing journey into the chaotic maze of lanes that make
up the inner city of Banaras. The film will feature as part
of the New Asian Currents category in the YIDFF. The New Asian
Currents is a film and video program featuring the work of
emerging documentarists from around Asia. This documentary
is among 29 of the selected works from over 830 entries to
this program this year.
The
film is conceived and directed by Kalpana Subramanian, videographer
for the Crossing Project and is graduate of the National Institute
of Design. The content research was guided by Dr.Madhu Khanna,
the Project scholar. The film is produced by Ranjit Makkuni,
the Project Director The Crossing Project, Sacred World Foundation.
The
Sacred World Foundation is one of the world's leading design
and research think tanks bridging technological and traditional
cultures, with innovation flourishing between both cultures.
It has paved the way for artists and craft persons from developing
nations, showing how culture can be driver of technological
innovation.
